Buffalo, N.Y. – Niagara Softball dropped the first game of the weekend series against Canisius 10-5 at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
Niagara got on the board first in the top of the first as
Sophia Marrero reached on a fielding which allowed
Donnalea Barnett to score to put the Purple Eagles up 1-0.
Canisius knotted up the game at one as Grace Walker recorded a sac bunt which allowed Ella Johel to score.
The Golden Griffins took the lead in the second inning as Johel doubled to right center for a two-run RBI where Michaela Sycalik and Maddy Hans scored to put the game a 3-1.
The Purple and White chipped at the Golden Griffins lead as Marrero flied out in a sacrifice effort to score
CJ Haney.
Canisius added to their lead in the fourth as Johel and Sycalik scored off the bat of Talia Yermian to put the contest at 5-3 in favor of the Golden Griffins.
In the fifth inning
Hailey Cenname coubled down the left field line where Barnett and Haney scored to cut Canisius lead down to one run. Cenname then scored off a wild pitch to knot the game at five a piece.
In the bottom half of inning five Canisius took back the lead as Grace Walker scored from an Alyssa Onyeagwa double.
The Golden Griffins added four runs in the sixth as Sycalik, Johel, Walker and Escoto all scored to round out the contest 10-5.
Ryan Hatty started the game in the circle for the Purple Eagles as she pitched four innings as she faced 21 batters with two punchouts.
Abbey Steen pitched 1.1 innings as she faced 12 batters with two strikeouts.
Jenna Martin pitched the final two outs of the contest as she faced two batters.

• Niagara goes to 28-102-1 all-time against Canisius
• Barnett and
Abigail Ras extended their on base streak to six games, Ras is currently on her longest reached base streak of the season
• Barnett is on a five-game stolen base streak as she has stolen a total of 11 bases in that streak
