Softball Drops MAAC, Home Openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara softball team opened its home and MAAC schedules with two defeats to the Fairfield Stags on Sunday.

Fairfield 2, Niagara 0

Four errors helped negate a one-hit pitching performance by Jennifer Sansano as Niagara (8-15, 0-2 MAAC) was nipped 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

Sansano worked herself out of a first inning jam when Fairfield loaded the bases, but failed to score a run. Sansano, then, recorded four straight strikeouts in the second and third innings en route to eight strikeouts for the game.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when two errors by Niagara allowed the Stags to take the lead. Fairfield's Sam Frungillo reached first base on a fielding error and was replaced by Nikki Osofsky who would score on another error three batters later as the Stags took a 1-0 lead.

Niagara threatened in the sixth. The Purple Eagles loaded the bases with one out but left the inning with three runners on base and no runs.

Sansano's bid for a no-hitter came to an end in the seventh inning with two outs when Kristen Filicia hit a home run to left field. In NU's half of the inning, the Purple Eagles got the leadoff batter on base, but went down in order to end the game.

Fairfield 17, Niagara 1

Fairfield (6-14, 4-1 MAAC) took a significant lead in the first inning on its way to the sweep. The Stags scored 15 runs on 11 hits while NU committed four errors in the first stanza. The Stags would later add two runs in the fourth.

Niagara's lone run of the day came in the fifth inning. Theresa Fleckenstein hit a single to left centerfield to score Rachel Zianowski from second for her second RBI of the season.

Niagara is back on the field on Monday, April 7 to face Iona in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
