Purple Eagles Drop Two To Penguins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Niagara softball team fell in a doubleheader against the Youngstown State Penguins, 6-0 and 3-2, on Thursday.

Niagara (13-27) was held to two hits in game one of the doubleheader as YSU (25-20) gradually pulled away for the win. The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning when the Penguins pushed across three runs. In the fourth inning, YSU added two more runs on consecutive hits and one more in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage.

The Purple Eagles were clipped in game two as the host scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Niagara led 1-0 after the first inning when a RBI ground out by Bridget Hogan scored Brittany Richberg from third base. NU made it 2-0 in the third inning. Aileen Hinton singed up the middle, but the catcher was unable to corral the throw from the centerfielder which allowed Chanelle Ward to score.

However, Niagara's bats went silence which allowed YSU to mount a comeback. NU went hitless in the final four innings. The Penguins answered in their half of the third with one run and tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. The game-winning run came in the sixth inning on a passed ball.

Jennifer Sansano had five strikeouts and allowed just two hits in four innings for the no decision.

Niagara returns home this weekend. The Purple Eagles will face Monmouth on Saturday at Noon where they will honor their five seniors and will play Rider on Sunday at 11 a.m.
