Softball Drops Two to Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Niagara softball team was swept in a MAAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon by dropping two close contests to the Marist Red Foxes. Marist improves to 16-20 (7-3 MAAC) while the Purple Eagles fall to 12-23 (2-8 MAAC).

Marist 7, Niagara 6

Despite a six-run lead and 10 team hits, a powerful sixth inning completed the comeback as the Red Foxes downed Niagara 7-6.

Freshman Bridget Hogan finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs, driving in three runs in the fifth frame with her team-leading third homerun of the season.

With senior Aileen Hinton on first and a sacrifice bunt from junior Amanda Werth to advance Hinton to second, junior Katelyn Gruarin brought her teammate around the bags with an RBI double to left center to get Niagara on the board.

Senior Brittany Richberg and junior Desarae Maldonado would each score in the sixth to extend their lead by six runs.

Senior Jennifer Sansano (8-7) threw 5 ½ shutout innings including six strikeouts. The Clarence, N.Y. native finished with seven strikeouts while drawing the loss in the circle.

Never advancing past second base through the first five innings and facing a 6-0 deficit, Marist collected seven runs off seven hits in the sixth.

Senior Paige Lewis (9-5) earned the win for the Red Foxes.

Marist 4, Niagara 2

Niagara threatened with two runs in the sixth inning but eventually fell in game two, 4-2.

Marist scattered four runs through five innings on eight hits.

The Red Foxes began the game's scoring by pulling a double steal with runners on first and third.

Des Maldonado hit a sixth inning two-run shot over the left field wall, her second homer of the season and a new career-high.

Freshman Ali VanGiesen singled up the middle before Maldonado's base clearing homer. VanGiesen registered her fourth hit and third run scored in the last three games.

The Purple Eagles return home to host the Canisius Golden Griffins on Monday, April 21. First pitch of the Battle of the Bridge matchup is set for 12 p.m.
