Strong Pitching Leads to Day Two Split at Rebel Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Following a 7-4 loss to the Temple University Owls, the Niagara softball team used strong pitching and tight defense to shutout the St. Francis Red Flash 2-0.

Temple 7, Niagara 4

A slow start and a 6-0 lead in the third gave the Owls a 7-4 victory over the Purple Eagles on Tuesday.

Katelyn Gruarin drove in two runs with Katelyn Gruarin and Amanda Werth each adding an RBI.

Niagara 2, St. Francis (Pa.) 0

A nearly perfect game by 2013 MAAC Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Sansano gave Niagara its first shutout of the season and a win over the Red Flash, 2-0.

The victory comes just one day after a 11-1 loss to St. Francis.

Sansano held SFU off until a one-out walk in the top of the 6th inning broke up the feat. The senior hurler threw the MAAC's only no-hitter last season en route to the program's first Pitcher of the Year award. Sansano finished with four strikeouts while giving up just two hits in the effort.

Niagara broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with back-to-back two-out doubles. Freshman Bridget Hogan reached on an extra base hit, and promptly crossed home plate with junior Desarae Maldonado's double to put NU up 1-0. A fifth inning RBI-single by senior Brittany Richberg would be all the scoring her team would need to even the series with the Red Flash.

The Purple Eagles return to action Wednesday afternoon to face Sacred Heart at 12 p.m. before a rematch with Temple slated for 2 p.m.
