BALTIMORE – The Niagara Purple Eagles split their final two games in the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on Sunday to finish the weekend 3-1.
"Today capped off a very nice weekend," head coach
Larry Puzan said. "We played very consistent ball and we were able to bounce back after a tough loss."
Drexel 8, Niagara 0
Niagara dropped its only game of the four-game invitational as a second inning offensive explosion by Drexel (7-10) was enough for the Dragons to win 8-0 in five innings. The Dragons pushed across seven runs on seven hits in the second inning off freshman pitcher
Bridget Hogan. Drexel added one more run in the fifth inning.
Offensively, the Purple Eagles were held to three hits, there fewest in four games.
Niagara 9, Hampton 2
Niagara (7-9) bounced back by handling Hampton (9-11), 9-2, in its final game of the invitational. A career-high four RBIs by
Aileen Hinton paced the Purple Eagles while
Desarae Maldonado went 3-for-4 with two RBIs,
Amanda Werth added two hits and two RBIs and Hogan drove in a run.
NU opened the scoring the first inning when Hogan doubled to right centerfield to score
Ally Gay and was followed by a RBI single by Maldonado. NU scored three runs in the third inning with two outs. Maldonado drove home her second run in the game with a single up the middle and Hinton singled to score Maldonado and
Ambur Farmer.
The Purple Eagles increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning on a double by Werth which scored two. NU added two runs in the seventh from Hinton.
Jennifer Sansano had her second complete game win of the weekend, striking five and allowing two runs and six hits.
Niagara is back on the field for a midweek doubleheader at Youngstown State on Wednesday, March 19 at 3 p.m.
