The Purple Eagles will travel to Baltimore to play in the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on March 15 and 16.
On Saturday, the Purple Eagles (4-8) will have a doubleheader against Rhode Island and the host UMBC. Niagara faces Drexel and Hampton in another doubleheader on Sunday.
Rhode Island is currently 1-8. Jocelyn Mattison leads the team with seven hits and two runs. UMBC is currently 12-4. Danielle O'Neill leads the Retrievers with 18 runs, while Taylor Hall leads the team with 22 hits. O'Neill and Hall both have three home runs.
Drexel is 4-9 overall and won its last game 5-3 after a three-game losing streak. Baeley Reed leads the Dragons with 11 runs, while Leticia Matsuoka leads the team with 15 hits.
The Hampton Pirates are 9-8 and currently on a four-game win streak. Diamond Ponds leads the Pirates with 13 runs, 5 of which were scored in the Pirates last three games. Margaret Wilkins leads the team with 21 hits. Taylor McCoy has hit two home runs.
At the Rebel Spring Games
Last week the Purple Eagles played eight games in the Rebel Spring Games Classic in Winter Park, Fla. The Purple Eagles won three out of those eight games: a 9-2 win against La Salle, a 2-0 win against St. Francis, and a 4-0 win against Temple.
Against La Salle, Rebecca Saggiomo and Ambur Farmer both had two runs a piece, while Brittany Richberg had a run, two hits and 2 RBIs. Farmer also had three hits and three RBIs during the game. Desarae Maldonado, Chanelle Ward, Alexandra Moore, and Miranda Ortega also contributed one run each in Niagara's 9-2 win.
The Purple Eagles made a comeback and defeated St. Francis 2-0 after losing 11-1 in its first match-up. St. Francis was 4-0 going into the tournament, and its loss to Niagara dropped its nearly-perfect record to 6-2 at the time. Bridget Hogan and Ambur Farmer scored the two runs for the Purple Eagles win.Â
The Purple Eagles defeated Temple 4-0 after losing 7-4 the previous day. Gruarin, Ortega, Richberg, and VanGiesen each contributed one run to the Purple Eagles win.
Farmer, who was named College Sports Madness' MAAC Player of the Week, leads the team in batting average (.321) and slugging percentage (.464). Richberg leads the team with 13 hits and eight runs. Gruarin has 10 hits and six runs. Maldonado also has 10 hits and Farmer currently has six runs.Â
In the circle, Jennifer Sansano (3-1) has a 2.27 ERA in six appearances and leads the staff with 25 strikeouts.
