NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men's and women's swimming & diving teams welcomed the Colgate Raiders to the Oxy Aquatic Center on Friday night.
The women's team fell 136.5-99.5, while the men came out on top with a score of 133-108.
The Purple Eagles had 13 first place winners in both individual and team events.
"The women swam very well tonight," said head coach
Ben Nigro. "Many of them had a chance to swim different events and they took the opportunity to make the most of them."
The women's side was led by
Emily York (5:30.11),
Dakota Grantham (5:39.06), and
Montanna Valler (5:39.07) finishing 1-2-3 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.
The women also had a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with
Margaret Byrne (1:13.49),
Grace Coyle (1:14.88), and
Grace McMahon (1:21.75).
In the team portion, the women once again finished 1-2-3 in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, led by the team of
Annie Eckhardt, York,
Meredith Ricks, and
Sydney Kligys.
The men's side of things saw a dominating performance. The team of
Shane Baxter,
Edgar Melchor,
Shawn Warner, and
James Crumm won the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:37.98.
Warner also won the 1000 Yard Freestyle (9:47.60) and 500 Yard Freestyle (4:41.99), while Baxter took home the top spot in the 200 Yard IM (1:59.17), 100 Yard Backstroke (51.56) with Melchor winning the 100 Yard Butterfly (53.02) and 100 Yard Breastroke (1:00.67).
On the board,
Ryan Monteleone (Men's 1 meter & 3 meter) and
Cara Mergner (Women's 3 meter) brought home the victory for the Purple and White.
"On the men's side we put together a game plan to try and win a majority of the events to come out on top," said Nigro. "We swept both diving events, which gave us a considerable lead. The rest of the men stepped up and fulfilled the game plan."
The teams return to the pool when they head to Akron, Ohio for the Zippy Invite from Dec. 5-7.
