Box ScoreNIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles shut out the Brock University Badgers 4-0 in the team's lone tune-up Sunday afternoon before dropping the puck on the 2014-15 season next weekend.
Niagara took an early lead as
Isaac Kohls connected on a feed from freshman
Luke Edwards less than four minutes into the game to give the Purple and White the 1-0 advantage. NU outshot the visitors 14-8 through the opening frame as it took the one-goal lead into the intermission.
Sophomore
Adrian Ignagni got the start between the pipes for Niagara and the sophomore stood tall through the second period that saw the Purple Eagles go on the penalty kill three times, with the first two penalties coming back-to-back. The Mississauga, Ontario native turned away all 14 shots he faced in the period on his way to a 27-save night overall.
Still holding onto the one-goal lead, the Purple Eagles forced open the floodgates in the third.
Robert Angiolella, a freshman, scored five minutes in after
Phillip Nasca found him alone in front.
Lawrence Smith, also playing in his first action for the Purple Eagles, collected a secondary assist on the play.
Patrick Conte added to the lead six minutes later when he picked the pocket of a Brock defender, went in on a breakaway from the blue line, and beat the goalie at the 11:22 mark.
Dan Kolenda rounded out the scoring after a feed from
Sam Alfieri sent the junior in on a mini-breakaway of his own and the Superior, Wisconsin native ripped a wristshot far side to give NU the 4-0 lead.
The Badgers had a 5-on-3 power play chance with 3:24 left in regulation, but Angiolella blocked a pair of shots and Ignani made one final save to give NU the 4-0 victory.
Four Purple Eagles were a +2 on the afternoon while a total of 16 had at least a +1. Seven players from NU collected a point.
Niagara get the 2014-15 season started this weekend when they host the Clarkson Golden Knights on Friday, Oct. 10 and the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, Oct. 11.
