Volleyball Sweeps Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Niagara concluded its three-match road swing with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 sweep of the Iona Gaels on Sunday.

Niagara (7-11, 3-4 MAAC) set season-highs in kills (46), assists (40) and digs (69) in a three-set match on its way to collecting its third MAAC win of the season. Three Purple Eagles also set season-highs in a three-set match: Alex Stone with 14 kills, Alexis Gray with 34 assists and Rylee Hunt with 19 digs. Amanda Sedore added 11 kills and nine digs, and Melissa McGwin had 10 kills. Four Purple Eagles had double-digit digs in Hunt, Allison Reis and Nicole Matheis each had 13, and Gray had 10 to go along with her 34 assists for her sixth double-double of the season.

"The team did a great job of bouncing back quickly after yesterday's loss," head coach Vilis Ozols said.  "They turned in a well-rounded effort and our passing and serving were key to the turnaround. The connection between Alexis (Gray) and our middles, Mel (McGwin) and Alex (Stone) was another determining factor with them racking up 24 kills between them."

NU never trailed in the opening set en route to winning 25-21. Niagara persevered in the second set, which featured nine ties and six lead changes. Trailing 20-18, an ace by Hunt sparked a 6-0 run for the Purple Eagles. A kill by Sedore ended the set in favor of the Purple and White, 25-23. In the third set, NU erased a 13-5 deficit to eventually take a 20-17 lead. A kill by Stone clinched the match.

The Purple Eagles, who have won three of their last four matches, will begin a five-match homestand starting Saturday, Oct. 18 against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
