BUFFALO, N.Y. – Niagara saw both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams fall to cross-town rival Canisius on Saturday at the Burt Flickenger Center at Erie Community College.
The men's team was defeated by a 176-121 score, while the women dropped a 195-93 decision to the Golden Griffins.
"Despite some good individual performances we failed to compete with Canisius College today," head coach
Ben Nigro said. "When we return to this pool during the MAAC Championships, we will be to be better."
The men had six victories in individual events off a combined effort from
Shane Baxter,
Shawn Warner and
Robert Brown. Baxter led the way with a trio of wins in the 100 backstroke (52.03), 200 backstroke (1:55.26) and 100 butterfly (52.95). Warner took home a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 butterfly at 1:58.10, and the 200 IM clocking in at 2:01.46. Brown added an individual win in the 100 freestyle finishing with a time of 48.82.
The team of Baxter,
Carl Roycroft, Warner and Brown combined in the 400 medley relay, touching the wall first at 3:33.38.
Several Purple Eagles from the women's side earned second-place times including
Emily York in the 200 freestyle (2:03.14) and
Meredith Ricks in the 100 backstroke (1:02.76) and the 200 backstroke (2:17.58).
Clare Curran swam a 2:38.19 in the 200 breaststroke for second place as well.
Ricks and York combined with
Grace Coyle and
Ashley Harrington in the 400 medley relay for second place, clocking in at 4:12.34.
The Purple Eagles wrap up the 2013-14 regular season next Saturday, Jan. 25 at home when Niagara hosts St. Bonaventure at the Oxy Aquatic Center for Senior Day. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
