Softball Earns Ninth-Straight Win in Split With Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Niagara softball team earned its program-record ninth consecutive win with a game one victory over the Iona Gaels, 2-0. Following the shut out, NU fell in the nightcap in extra innings, 4-3. With the split, Niagara’s record moves to 14-26 (9-7 MAAC) while Iona goes to12-34 (8-6 MAAC).

Niagara scattered two runs on seven hits to shut out Iona, 2-0.

Senior Alexis Wayne gave Niagara an early 1-0 lead with an RBI-single to left field, her 21st RBI of the season. Wayne finished 2-for-3 including her 24th career double.

Following two scoreless innings, sophomore Ambur Farmer smacked a single to center field to score senior Becky Zill  from third, giving the Purple Eagles the 2-0 lead.

Junior Jennifer Sansano  earned her fifth shutout of 2013, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 11 batters to improve her season ERA to 2.09. Iona’s Carly Argyle (10-19) also pitched a strong game, giving up one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts.

Iona 4, Niagara 3

NU saw its record-breaking win streak come to an end in extra innings, falling to Iona in the nightcap, 4-3.

The Gaels used back-to-back homeruns in the fourth inning to equalize the score, 3-3.

A two-run homer from Becky Zill gave the Purple Eagles a first inning 2-0 advantage, a lead which they extended just one inning later. After reaching first on a fielder’s choice, senior Gabrielle Lustrinelli rounded the bases and found home plate with help from a double to left center by junior Aileen Hinton.

Both teams were held scoreless and combined for just three hits after the fourth, forcing extra innings to decide the game two winner. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Beth Kann hit a walkoff homer over the center field wall to secure the victory for the Gaels.

Jenn Sansano drew the loss for Niagara after entering the game in the fifth, fanning three batters and allowing one earned run in 3.1 innings.

The Purple Eagles return to the diamond to close out the regular season with three games against University of Maryland-Baltimore this weekend, a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 at 12 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
