ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Niagara softball extended its winning streak to six games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure Tuesday evening. Niagara improves to 11-25 while the Bonnies drop to 6-36. Six-consecutive wins are the most for the program since winning eight in a row in 2009, a season that ended with a loss in the MAAC tournament championship.

Niagara scored eight runs in the final frame for a comeback win against St. Bonaventure, 8-2.
Junior
Jennifer Sansano struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run against her former club for her fourth-consecutive win. Sansano has fanned at least eight batters in each of her last four starts, and in those games holds a 0.25 ERA.
Seven different Purple Eagles would score Niagara’s eight runs on eight hits as they batted through the order to complete the late rally.
With no outs and two on base,
Ambur Farmer laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance
Gabrielle Lustrinelli and
Rebecca Saggiomo into scoring position. With the next at-bat,
Desarae Maldonado tied the contest with one swing of the bat off a two-run double to left center. Six more runs would score before the inning’s end, including
Becky Zill’s 106
th career RBI, now just one shy of third-most in program history.
The Bonnies scored both runs in the first inning, but would be held scoreless with just three hits through the remaining six innings.
Niagara was led by
Amanda Werth who compiled three hits on four at-bats. Lustrinelli entered the .300 batting average club after hitting 3-for-4 on the day, joining Werth, Zill,
Brittany Richberg, and
Alexis Wayne.

Freshman
Sydney Smyers earned her first collegiate win in a nightcap victory over the Bonnies, 6-3.
Katelyn Gruarin went a perfect 3-for-3, while
Alexis Wayne hit her ninth double of the season, tying her career-high.
Ambur Farmer started the scoring in the second inning for Niagara with her second home run of the season, a single shot to left field to cut the deficit, 2-1.
Amanda Werth’s two-run double in the second inning combined with an RBI-single from Wayne put the Purple and White ahead 4-2. Two more runs in the seventh inning would add the insurance Niagara needed to complete the mid-week sweep.
The Purple Eagles complied a season-high 14 hits in the victory. Smyers allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters in seven innings.
Niagara returns to the diamond tomorrow for its fourth doubleheader in as many days to face Cleveland State at Niagara Softball Field starting at 3 p.m. The Vikings are 17-21 this season, including a split against Green Bay on Tuesday, winning game one 9-1 before falling in game two, 7-3. Erica McNew paces the Viking offense, batting .471 with 34 hits in 38 games including 15 homeruns and 33 RBIs.
