Softball Hosts Third Annual SLAMphoma to Benefit NU Student

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara softball team will host the third annual “SLAMphoma” event on Sunday, April 21 at Niagara Softball Field following the team’s conference doubleheader against Manhattan at Noon. The annual event raises funds for a local community member who has been diagnosed with lymphoma.

This year’s event will raise money to benefit current Niagara University student Sarah Stocum. Stocum, a senior majoring in Special Education, was diagnosed with lymphoma during the summer of 2012. The Central New York native has chosen to persevere through her diagnosis and continue her education while battling the disease.

As is tradition in the event, a home run derby will be held immediately following the second game of the afternoon doubleheader. Each Purple Eagle will participate and fans can donate a set amount per each home run hit.

In addition, there is an open invitation to any fan to participate in the home run derby with a $10 donation. Green t-shirts will be on sale donning the name “Stocum,” and fans can purchase raffle tickets and enter to win various prize packages, including gift certificates and apparel.

“It is a super fun day, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards Sarah’s medical bills,” said senior Gabrielle Lustrinelli  the event coordinator. “It really hits home now this year, and we really want to give back to the community.”

The inaugural SLAMphoma event was held in 2011 to benefit Niagara softball alum Jenna Baker  whom was diagnosed with the disease shortly after graduation in 2010. In two years, SLAMphoma has raised over $15,000.

Fans interested in participating can sign up during the game on Sunday. Monetary donations are also being accepted, and can be sent to:
