NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara softball team (7-18) swept the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (10-25) by scores of 2-1 and 4-1 at Niagara Field on Friday afternoon.

"Today was a total team effort," head coach Al Dirschberger said. "We executed in all three phases of the game. It's nice to be healthy and we need to continue to build on our success."

Niagara 2, Mount St. Mary's 1
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, Niagara played a solid defensive game coupled with small ball tactics. Niagara tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning, when junior Becky Zill launched a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring freshman Ambur Farmer.

The Purple Eagles scored the game-winning run in the third inning, when senior Jennifer Hare hit a single up the middle, scoring sophomore Jessica Hitchcock.

Senior pitcher Julie DiMatteo was in the zone during the contest, retiring 20 consecutive batters to finish the game, after giving up her only earned run. The Maine native went the distance, throwing 10 strikeouts to earn Niagara's second consecutive win.

Niagara 4, Mount St. Mary's 1
Niagara took control of the game in the first inning, scoring twice for a 2-0 lead. A Zill single scored Farmer for a 1-0 lead, while a single by Alexis Wayne would eventually score Zill.

The Mountaineers would score their only run in the second inning, but a Zill double in the fifth inning would give Niagara a 3-1 lead. The Purple Eagles would add one more run when senior Jaclyn Russell would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring junior Sarah Anthon.

Sophomore Kim Bryson earned the win, throwing six innings, allowing two hits while strikingout eight. Senior Bri Allen earned the save, by throwing a scoreless seventh inning.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Saturday, April 14th, when they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action action against Iona at Niagara Field.
