YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Niagara softball team (4-16) dropped a non-conference doubleheader against the Youngstown State Penguins (13-5) on Wednesday afternoon, by scores of 5-1 and 10-1.
"It was a tough day, but I'm proud of how the team has been able to come together and battle against a good Penguins team with as many injuries as we have," head coach
Al Dirschberger said. "We now have some time off to regroup and get ready for our final non-conference games and the all important MAAC schedule."

Kim Bryson pitched well for the Purple Eagles, keeping the game scoreless through three innings of play, including seven strikeouts.
The Penguins would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when with two runners on and one out, freshman
Ambur Farmer dropped a fly ball in centerfield. Youngstown State would double its lead two batters later, when a routine play by junior
Alexis Wayne allowed another Penguin to score.
Youngstown State would take a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning, when Niagara got on the scoreboard. After hitting a single to break up the no-hitter earlier in the frame, freshman
Amanda Arendt would score on an error after Farmer put the ball into play.
The Penguins would push further away from the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on four singles.
Bryson went the distance, allowing five runs on nine hits, while fanning nine batters.
Youngstown State 10, Niagara 1
The Penguins scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits off of senior
Bri Allen. Niagara would respond in the top of the second inning, as senior
Ali Grab put the ball into play in a based loaded situation, scoring Wayne who got on earlier in the frame via an error.
The Penguins would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning on two hits and two errors for a commanding 6-1 lead. Youngstown State would add four more runs on four hits and three errors between the third and fourth innings for a 10-1 lead.
The Purple Eagles won't be back in action until April 3, when they visit the Akron Zips.
