Softball Finishes Rain Shortened First Day

Box Score

BALTIMORE - The Niagara softball team (0-6) finished the rain-shortened first day at the 2012 University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Retriever Classic with a 7-5 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson, while the team's game against Princeton was rained out.

Down 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Niagara would tie the game with two solo home runs by junior Gabrielle Lustrinelli and freshman Desarae Maldonado. The tied game wouldn't last long, as the Knights would score four in the bottom half of the inning for a commanding 7-3 lead.

The Purple Eagles would score twice in the final two innings, with junior Becky Zill scoring on a Jennifer Hare double in the sixth inning and freshman Amanda Arendt scoring on a Zill double in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough.

Sophomore Kim Bryson took the loss, throwing five innings and earning five strikeouts.
