Softball Sweeps On Day One

BALTIMORE - The Niagara softball team (3-8) took care of business during day one of the 2012 University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Dawg Pound Classic on Saturday, defeating Seton Hall (6-9) and Coppin State (4-6). 

"I thought we played much better today," head coach Al Dirschberger said. "These were two good wins and now we need to prep for tomorrow and keep it rolling."

With the game tied at one due to an Ambur Farmer home run, Niagara would score in the top of the second inning. Junior Gabrielle Lustrinelli would single down the left field line, scoring sophomores Aileen Hinton and Brittany Richberg to gain a lead they would never relinquish. 

The Purple Eagles would add three more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-2 lead, highlighted by a two-RBI by junior Becky Zill

Seton Hall would score two in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Niagara shut the door in the top of the sixth inning. Farmer smashed her second career home run to give Niagara an 8-4 lead. 

Sophomore Kim Bryson was solid in the circle for Niagara, allowing four runs on six hits and tossing a career-high 11 strikeouts.

The Purple Eagles would score six consecutive runs to control their game against the Coppin State Eagles from start to finish. 

Niagara played small ball, when Lustrinelli would hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Farmer in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. A frame later, senior Jaclyn Russell would score on a single by Richberg for a 2-0 lead.

For the third consecutive inning Niagara would score, with Russell and freshman Desarae Maldonado scoring via errors. Lustrinelli would hit a single in the fourth inning to score Farmer for the second time in the contest, giving the Purple Eagles a 5-0 lead.

Junior Alexis Wayne would round out scoring for Niagara, after she hit a triple and scored two baters later. 

Senior Julie DiMatteo threw the complete game, allowing three hits and one run, while fanning 13 batters.
