BALTIMORE - The Niagara softball team (0-5) is heading south this weekend to take part in the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Retriever Classic, the first of two UMBC tournaments that the Purple Eagles will play in this season.
Niagara is part of a seven team event, joining Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rivals Canisius (1-3) and Iona (4-4), along with the host-Retrievers (2-6), Princeton (0-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0) and James Madison (3-6).
The Purple Eagles will take on Fairleigh Dickinson and Princeton on Friday, while clashing with James Madison and the host Retrievers on Saturday. The softball team will wrap up play this weekend with a Sunday morning contest against Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Purple Eagles are looking for their first win of the season, after a tough weekend against tough competition, including Big Ten power Purdue and defending five-time Southern Conference champion Chattanooga.

Jennifer Hare played well last weekend, with a .357 batting average and five hits. Freshman outfielder
Katelyn Gruarin has already made an impact for Niagara, as she is currently third on the team in batting average (.333) and leads the team in runs scored (3).
Following this weekend's games, Niagara heads back to UMBC for the Dawg Pound Invitational from March 9-10.
