CHATTANOOGA, TENN. - The Niagara softball team (0-4) dropped two contests to Purdue and Valparaiso during the second day of the 2012 Frost Classic Inspired By Memorial.
"I was disappointed in our effort and work ethic today," head coach
Al Dirschberger said. "We didn't do the little things to be successful. We let adversity dictate how we played today. Tomorrow, we need to be better."
Purdue 14, Niagara 6
The game started well for the Purple Eagles, with freshman
Ambur Farmer drawing a lead-off walk. Farmer would steal second base and third base before scoring on a throwing error to give Niagara the 1-0 lead.
The Boilermakers would score the game's next 10 runs, scoring once in the bottom of the second inning and earning nine runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior
Bri Allen would only last two innings against Purdue, with sophomore
Kim Bryson coming on in relief.
Niagara would score five runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 10-6 game, highlighted by a two-run double by Farmer and RBI singles by
Brittany Richberg and
Desarae Maldonado.
Purdue would score four more runs to close out the game.
Valparaiso 9, Niagara 1
Niagara's second game of the evening was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Crusaders touched Purple Eagles starting pitcher
Julie DiMatteo for seven runs.
The Purple Eagles scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, while the Crusaders responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman
Katelyn Gruarin would hit a triple, while senior
Jennifer Hare singled her home.
The Purple Eagles wrap up its opening weekend of play on Sunday, taking on East Tennessee State at 11 a.m.
