The Niagara volleyball team heads into its final regular season weekend with a chance at the regular title with matches at Fairfield and Iona.
Niagara (15-11, 12-4 MAAC) will be one of the four teams (Fairfield, Canisius and Siena) participating in next weekend’s MAAC Tournament. The Purple Eagles, who are currently tied with Siena for third place, still have a shot at claiming the regular season title; however they need some help. Niagara will have to defeat Fairfield (18-8, 13-3 MAAC) on Saturday and Iona (8-19, 5-10 MAAC) on Sunday and will need Canisius (16-10, 13-3 MAAC) and Siena (18-10, 12-4 MAAC) to lose a match.
NU had its season-best six-match winning streak come to an end in its previous match on Sunday. Niagara now turns its attention to its final two regular season matches. NU will look to avenge its loss in the first meeting between Fairfield on Oct. 14. The defeat snapped the Purple Eagles’ six-match win streak in the series. NU swept Iona in the first meeting between the clubs and NU has a nine-match winning streak against the Gaels.
The Purple Eagles remain one of the most efficient teams in the conference. NU is second in hitting (.216), third in opponent hitting (.188) and first in aces per set (1.49).
Kari Honomichl s splendid senior season saw her tied a team-best 21 kills and set a career-high in digs with 27 on Sunday. Honomichl leads the MAAC in kills per set (3.74) and points per set (4.33).
Ellen Senf is leading the team in hitting percentage (.299) and seventh in the conference,
Michelle James in fourth in assists per game (9.70) and
Allison Reis is seventh in digs per set (4.97).
