FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara volleyball team defeated the Fairfield Stags in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-23) on Sunday from Alumni Hall. The win extends the Purple Eagles’ winning streak to 21 matches against conference opponents.
“Our serving was the difference in that match,” head coach Susan Clements said. “We were able to keep them out of system. Ellen (Senf) was huge for us offensively today.”
Sophomore Ellen Senf paced Niagara (7-7, 2-0 MAAC) with a career-high and match-high 17 kills to lead the Purple Eagles to their series-best fourth straight victory over Fairfield (4-8, 1-1 MAAC).
Seniors Hannah Hedrick and Kathy Bibler also contributed to the attack. Hedrick had 10 kills in the match and moved into sole possession of second place in career kills at Niagara, surpassing Erin Graham (’05). Kathy Bibler had season-high nine kills and team-best .348 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, Niagara broke a 20-20 tie with a 5-1 run to claim the set. The Purple Eagles made quick work of the Stags in the second set. NU was up 15-2 at one point in the set and won the set, 25-15. The third set mirrored the first set, with the score locked at 20-20, when Senf took over. Senf recorded back-to-back kills to give NU a 22-21 lead and scored the match-clinching point at 25-23.
Niagara will host archrival Canisius in its 2011 home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. Niagara will then host Syracuse in the second annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness match on Sunday at Noon. For more information about the team’s participation in the “Light the Night Walk” click
