Colgate Sweeps Swimming & Diving

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Niagara University swimming and diving teams had some strong efforts in the pool, but were swept by Colgate on Sunday afternoon.  The Raiders captured the men's competitions by a final score of 141-87, while winning the women's competition by a 170-70 margin.  

In the men's competition, freshman Shane Baxter broke his own NU record in the 100 backstroke as the lead leg in the medley relay.  He swam the event in 51.67, beating his previous time by 38 seconds.  He also won the 200 yard backstroke event with a time of 1:55.14.  Senior Nick Squire nabbed second place in the 1000 yard freestyle, clocking in at 10:59.66.  He also took second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.26.  

Ian O'Rourke swept the one-meter diving event (306.90) and three-meter diving event (316.73).  O'Rourke's performance qualified him for the NCAA Zone A Championship.  Sophomore Cody Heimbrock placed second place in the 3-meter event with a final score of 245.02. 

On the women's side, junior Julia Bulmahn placed second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:14.64) while fellow junior Aubrey Kettrick took second in the 500 yard freestyle clocking in at 5:25.71.  She also placed third in the 50 yard freestyle finishing at 25.67.  Lindsey Jackson finished in second in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing the event in a time of 2:36.53.  

Senior Ashley Jones set a new Niagara three-meter diving record with her final score of 245.99.  The previous record was set in 1989 by Lori Mead (240.52).  Jones also placed second in the in the one-meter diving event (237.22).

The Purple Eagles return to Monteagle Ridge on Saturday, Nov. 19 to host Waterloon.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Oxy Aquatic Center.
