LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a strong showing by the Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, the men dropped a close decision to Bryant, 125-112 and the women fell to both Bryant, 154-86, and Siena, 144-97 Saturday afternoon.
Both the men's and women's diving teams dominated the 1-meter and 3-meter events. For the women, Niagara nabbed top three in the 1-meter event, with senior
Ashley Jones placing first (230.30), junior
Faith O'Malley following with a score of 217.45 and senior
Laura Sadler earning third place (191.45). In the 3-meter diving event, Sadler placed first with a final score of 190.75 while teammate junior
Emily Hughes placed second (171.90).
On the men’s side, the diving trio of
Ian O'Rourke,
Cody Heimbrock and
Matthew Carrozzo swept the board in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events. O’Rourke finished first in the 3-meter event with a final score of 292.90, Heimbrock placed second (219.65) and Carrozzo followed with a score of 149.60. In the 1-meter event, O’Rourke earned first place (333.60), Heimbrock came in second (237.50) and Carrozzo finished third (147.60).
Junior
Lindsey Jackson placed third in the 200 yard IM, clocking in at 2:14.84 as well as the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.19. Fellow junior
Aubrey Kettrick also nabbed third place in both the 200 yard freestyle (1:58.66) and the 100 yard freestyle (54.34). The 400 yard freestyle team of Jackson, Kettrick,
Emily Kisloski and
Ashley Harrington saw a second place finish with a time of 3:42.86.
For the men, freshman
Shane Baxter had another strong run for the men, placing first in both the 200 yard IM, clocking in at 1:59.38 and the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 52.05. Fellow freshman
Corban Bothell earned top honors in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:21.79) and the 500 yard freestyle (4:56.98). Junior
Brian Sawma saw a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (53.58), and took second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.27. Baxter, Sawma and Bothell, plus teammate
Nate Resila earned a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay, finishing in 1:39.08.
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action tomorrow when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate in the Lineberry Natatorium. Competition begins at noon.
