NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - In the team's final home meet of the season, the Niagara swimming and diving team swept both events against cross-town rival Canisius on Saturday afternoon.
"The teams put on a terrific meet in order to beat a tough Canisius squad," head coach Ben Nigro said. "It was the perfect way for our seniors to complete their final meet."
The men's event was decided by the final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of Evinn Drusys, Tyler Ferguson, Jon Matchette and Kevin Jennings took top honors in the relay event with a time of 1:28.34, which gave Niagara the 122-121 victory.
Drusys also won the 50 yard free event (21.88) and the 100 yard free event (48.91), while Jennings took second place in the 50 yard free event. Senior Ian O'Rourke swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, with scores of 327.53 and 292.80, respectively.
The women's team defeated Canisius by a 135-108 margin, including double-winners Aubrey Kettrick and Ashley Jones. Kettrick won both the 100 and 200 yard free events (55.10/1:58.68), while Jones swept the women's diving events, with a score of 216.30 in the one-meter event and 213.68 in the three-meter event.
Erica Crane won the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:38.58, Julia Bulmahn won the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 2:15.70 and Ashley Harrington took top honors in the 200 yard IM, clocking in at 2:14.95.
Niagara heads to Olean, N.Y., to take on Little Three rival St. Bonaventure on Jan. 29.
