Softball Tops Lehigh, Falls To Mount St. Mary

BALTIMORE - The Niagara softball team (5-7) split a pair of games to wrap up play at the UMBC Spring Classic on Saturday. Niagara defeated Lehigh, 7-3, in its first game and fell to Mount St. Mary, 15-7, in its final game.

"Offensively we had a very good day at the plate, but we are still struggling defensively; we will continue to work on fixing our defensive mistakes," head coach Al Dirschberger said.

Kristin Kill and Jennifer Healy each went 3-for-3 en route to leading the Purple Eagles to their fifth win of the season. Niagara scored the game's final six runs after starting the fourth inning down 3-1.

Maggie McDonald led off the fourth inning with a home run to center field to bring NU to 3-2. Niagara would push five across home plate with two outs to take over the game in the sixth. Alexis Wayne hit a two-run home run which proved to be the game-winning runs for the Purple Eagles. Kristin Sito followed with a solo homer and two batters later, Healy launched a two-run blast to center field.

Julie DiMatteo went seven innings and struck out six for her second win of the season.

Mount St. Mary 15, Niagara 7

put Niagara on the board with a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Purple Eagles a 3-2 lead; Sito would later score on an fielding error a few batters later as NU took a 4-2 lead after two innings.

The Mount would score the next 10 runs from the third to fifth inning, including seven runs in the fifth inning, for a 12-4 advantage. Niagara scored three runs in its half of the fifth from a solo shot by Healy and a RBI single from McDonald, who also stole home.

Niagara would be held scoreless in the final two innings, while Mount St. Mary hit its fourth homer of the game with a three-run blast in the seventh.

Niagara will play at Lehigh next weekend.
