NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Niagara men's basketball team (10-9, 3-4 MAAC) dropped a road MAAC contest against the Iona Gaels (12-6, 4-3 MAAC), 64-47, on Saturday night. The Purple Eagles were held to a season-low 47 points and shot a season-low 28.0 percent from the field.
Niagara has lost three in a row for the first time since the beginning of the 2006-07 season during a 1-6 start. That team rebounded to win the 2007 MAAC Tournament and reach the NCAA Tournament.
Iona started the game on a 13-4 run and never trailed in their first home game since December. Nine different Gaels made a field goal in the win.
Junior point guard Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) led NU with 15 points. He shot 7-of-10 from the free throw line but handed out just one assist to go along with four turnovers.
Senior Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) tallied 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. Classmate Rob Garrison (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) added eight first-half points, including two 3-pointers. Bilal Benn (Philadelphia, Pa.) was held to three points but did pull in a game-high nine rebounds.
The 47 points are the lowest for a Purple Eagle team since dropping a 65-45 decision at George Mason Dec. 7, 2002.
Niagara gets back on the hardwood at Marist on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The contest will air live on Time Warner SportsNet Buffalo, cable channel 13.
