JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Senior Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) again produced late-game heroics in a double-overtime contest, but the Niagara men's basketball team (10-8, 3-3 MAAC) dropped a 90-86 road contest at Saint Peter's (8-8, 3-3 MAAC) on Monday.
Lewis beat the buzzer at the end of regulation with a 3-pointer in front of the NU bench to knot the score at 64-64 and send the game into the first overtime. With 16 seconds remaining in the extra session, Lewis again sank a contested triple from the same spot, tying the score at 74-74, forcing a second bonus period.
Saint Peter's Nick Leon, who finished with a game-high 29 points, scored the Peacocks' final six points to claim the victory. His backcourt mate Wesley Jenkins added 27 points.
"We realized after Saturday's loss that every person to a man had to change," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "It's going to take more than one game to do that, but we are going to do everything that we can to make it right."
With the Purple Eagles trailing 62-58 with 12 seconds remaining, Lewis buried a contested 3-pointer in front of the Niagara bench to bring NU within one. After a pair of Leon freebies, Nelson found Lewis in the exact same spot as the senior captain sent the game into overtime, reminiscent of the triple he scored in the 2009 MAAC Semifinal double-overtime win over Rider.
Niagara never led in the first overtime, but tied the score up three times. The only field goal the Purple Eagles connected on in the first extra session was Lewis' triple with 16 ticks left, forcing the second OT. Leon missed a running jumper at the buzzer that would have won the game in the first OT.
In the second OT period, SPC jumped out to a four-point lead, but another 3-pointer from Lewis inched Niagara closer at 82-81 with 2:02 remaining. Senior Rob Garrison (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) made a big 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to bring NU closer again, but Leon willed the Peacocks to the victory.
Lewis finished with a season-high 27 points and tied his career-high with six 3-pointers while pulling in nine rebounds. Senior Bilal Benn (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded his MAAC-best eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Garrison also finished with 16 points, including four triples in the loss. Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) finished with 12 points, eight assists and four steals.
The Purple Eagles take on Iona in their third-straight road game on Jan. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
