FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara softball team split a pair of games with the Fairfield Stags on Sunday afternoon. Niagara topped Fairfield 6-1 in game one and was edged in game two, 3-2.
In game one, Teresa Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) had her second three hit game of the season; Healy went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, including a RBI single in the first inning.
Niagara (18-15, 3-5 MAAC) grinded its way to a 6-0 lead in the seventh by scoring five runs from the fifth through seventh innings. Pitcher Julie DiMatteo (South Portland, Maine) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed only three hits; she loss the shutout in the seventh inning. Sophomore Maggie McDonald (Cicero, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Niagara was denied the sweep in a nail-biting 3-2 loss in the second half of the doubleheader.
Fairfield (18-21, 8-2 MAAC) pushed across two runs in the first inning. Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) had a RBI single in the second inning for NU’s first run in game two. The game would remain scoreless for the next three and half innings.
Healy led off the sixth inning with a double to left field and later scored on a single by Heather Lohrman (Newport Beach, Calif.) to tie the game at 2-2. The Stags scored the game-winning run on a leadoff homer.
The Purple Eagles have split their last four series with three coming against MAAC opponents. NU will host Big 4 rival Buffalo on Wednesday, April 22 at 3 p.m.
