FAIRFAX, Va. – The Niagara softball team split a pair of games on its final day competing in the George Mason Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Niagara lost to Cornell, 12-0, before beating the host George Mason 10-3.
"It was nice to see us bounce back from a couple games where we struggled in the mental part of the game,” head coach Al Dirschberger said. “Ending our trip 8-5 has given us the opportunity to evaluate what we need to work on over the next few weeks before we get into conference games. I am very proud of our players."
Niagara (8-5) finished the tournament 1-4 and managed only one hit in its 12-0 setback against the Big Red.
The Purple Eagles responded with an offensive outburst against George Mason. Niagara scored all 10 runs from the first to fourth innings and had 15 hits on the day.
Freshman pitcher Julie DiMatteo (South Portland, Maine) picked up her second win on the season. Four Purple Eagles had two RBIs games: Kristin Kill (South Portland, Maine), Teresa Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Kristin Sito (Elyria, Ohio).
Niagara will play in the James Madison Tournament beginning on March 13.
