Baseball Tops Cleveland State, 8-6

Matt Lucchesi

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Niagara offense propelled the baseball team (5-13) to its second-straight win on Tuesday, via an 8-6 victory at Cleveland State (3-14).

Eight of nine starters earned a hit in the win, and the lone starter who went hitless, freshman Wynton Bernard (Poway, Calif.), was on base three times on Tuesday, scoring a run and stealing two bases.

Niagara scored twice in the first, three times in the fourth and twice in the seventh, but used its insurance run in the ninth to hold off the Vikings in the win. Freshman Adam Wagner (Defiance, Ohio) earned his first career save, retiring the final four batters in order.

"We got a solid outing from all three pitchers (Tuesday)," Niagara head coach Rob McCoy said. "We threw strikes and changed speeds well, and our hitters were productive and capitalized on defensive mistakes from our opponent."

Junior Matt Wietlispach (Chicago, Ill.) led the game off with a home run for the second time this year. He finished the game 2-for-4. Cam Stykemain (Defiance, Ohio) and Timothy Cozier (Ajax, Ont.) also recorded multiple-hit games. Cozier knocked Stykemain in with a single in the first, giving NU a 2-0 lead. Niagara scored three times in the fourth inning with just one hit. The Purple Eagles drew two walks, were hit twice, and stole four bases in that inning alone.

On the monud, Chris Coleman (Pittsford, N.Y.) pitched four innings, allowing nine hits and four runs. He left in the fifth inning with a 5-4 lead, and senior Aaron Bjorkquist (Daly City, Calif.) earned the win, holding the Vikings to a pair of runs on four hits in 3.2 innings.

Niagara is back in action with a pair of seven-inning games on Wednesday at Kent State.
