BALTIMORE – The Niagara softball team won the UMBC Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record this weekend. On Sunday morning, the Purple Eagles defeated MAAC rival Siena, 6-4, and the Binghamton Bears, 8-1, on the final day of competition.
Niagara (14-7) outscored its opponents 44-12 in the five-game tournament. The Purple Eagles had the hot bat again this morning.
In today’s first game, the Purple Eagles scattered nine hits leading to six runs in the win over the Siena Saints. Kayla Hines (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit her third home run of the weekend in the second inning. Teresa Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) went 2-for-4 with a double and a single.
Pitcher Michelle Krier (Kenmore, N.Y.) went six strong innings with five strike outs and one earned run in the win. Cassie Stone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) picked up two strikeouts in one inning of work.
In the Binghamton game, Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Healy knocked out Niagara’s 10th and 11th home run of the weekend. Maggie McDonald (Cicero, N.Y.) scored two runs along with Healy; Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.), Kristin Kill (South Portland, Maine) and Hines had one run.
Ali Grab (Eria, Pa.) picked up the win; she went five innings, struck out one and allowed four hits and one earned run.
Niagara, winners of five-straight, will play at St. Francis (Pa.) on March 26 at 3 p.m.
