BALTMIORE – The Niagara softball team improved to 3-0 at the UMBC Tournament with a 7-2 victory over the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday afternoon.
“We did a nice job of being consistent today,” head coach Al Dirschberger said. “We attacked the ball offensively and defensively."
Freshman pitcher Julie DiMatteo (South Portland, Maine) had another strong showing on the mound. She went 6 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs for her sixth win of the season. DiMatteo had plenty of offensive support in the game.
Niagara (12-7) took over the game with a four-run third inning. Trailing 1-0, the Purple Eagles drove in four runs in the inning including a three-run shot by Teresa Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.). The Retrievers would add a run in their half of the third.
In the fifth inning, the Purple Eagles scored one run on an error to build a 5-2 lead. Healy hit a triple down the right field line to score two runners in the seventh inning for the final runs in the game.
Niagara concludes the UMBC Tournament with games against Siena and Binghamton on Sunday morning.
