BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Niagara softball team was edged by the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 3-2, in its final game of the impromptu weekend series.
Niagara (9-7) and Lehigh were playing this series after the James Madison Invitation was cancelled due to weather; both teams were scheduled to play in the tournament.
The two teams split yesterday to set up the rubber match today.
Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) smashed a two-run home run to break the 0-0 deadlock in the fourth inning. Lehigh would strike back with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to cut Niagara’s lead to 2-1. The Purple Eagles, however, could only manage one hit in the next two innings.
The Mountain Hawks scored two runs in the bottom sixth, including one from a bases loaded walk, to take a 3-2 lead. Baker led off the seventh with a single to center field, but the next three batters would retire in order.
Niagara is back on the road to play in the UMBC Tournament next weekend.
