Men's Hoops Sinks Saint Peter's, 73-55

Demetrius Williamson

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Junior forward Demetrius Williamson (Chicago, Ill.) tied a career-high with 19 points and five 3-point baskets in Niagara’s 73-55 victory over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Friday night at the ‘Taps’ Gallagher Center.

The Purple Eagle sixth man matched his career high in just 11 minutes of action. Williamson was a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc, and netted his 19th point on an acrobatic lay-in after a long offensive rebound.

"This team just has a way, where someone steps up when you need them to," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "Tonight it was (Demetrius Williamson). He came off the bench, and his numbers are just staggering."

Junior Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) added 16 points and tied a season high with six steals. The 5-foot-11 guard provided the Gallagher Center crowd with one of the most athletic plays of the night. With the Peacocks racing towards a would-be fast-break lay-up, Lewis sprinted back and blocked the shot out of nowhere. That block led to an Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) outlet pass to a wide-open Benson Egemonye (Benin City, Nigeria) and a powerful slam.

Niagara's defense held Saint Peter's to 55 points, marking the third-straight game NU held the opposition to under 60 points. The victory improves Niagara's conference record to 9-3, a game-and-a-half ahead of Sunday's opponent Fairfield, and an 18-6 overall mark.

Bilal Benn (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in the win. Nelson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while handing out five assists. Egemonye and Rob Garrison (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) each added seven and nine points, respectively.

The Purple Eagles return to the Gallagher Center for a 2 p.m. tip off on Sunday against the Fairfield Stags.
