Total Team Effort Leads Men's Hoops To Win, 74-64

EMMITTSBURG, Md. - The Niagara men's basketball team (4-2) had five players in double figures in a 74-64 road win over Mount St. Mary's (2-2) on Wednesday. The total team effort included a pair of double-doubles and a game-high 18 bench points in 23 minutes in senior Tyrone Lewis' (Levittown, Pa.) return.

"This was a total team effort for us (Wednesday)," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "We used a lot of balance to beat a very good team. Obviously, we are happy to have Tyrone back, but more than the five three's he hit tonight, he just makes everyone around him better."

Lewis entered the game at the 15:35 mark, his first action since exiting with a foot injury in the first half of the season opener. The senior guard did not miss a beat, connecting on his first four shots, all from behind the arc, in the first five minutes. He connected on five of his first six from long range and finished with 15 points in 10 bench minutes in the first half. Lewis' energy sparked the Purple Eagles, and NU led by as many as 11 in the first half.

If the opening stanza belonged to Lewis, the second half was dominated offensively by sophomore Kashief Edwards (Philadelphia, Pa.). After playing just 33 seconds in the first half after picking up two quick fouls in two seconds, Edwards scored all 14 of his career-high points after intermission.

"Kashief was a big key to this win," Mihalich added. "As proud as we are of his effort, we are even more proud of his maturity to rebound after a tough start."

Bilal Benn

Senior guards Bilal Benn (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Rob Garrison (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) each recorded a double-double in the win. The accomplishment was the 16th of Benn's career and fourth this season, while it was the first career double-double for Garrison.

Benn tallied 14 points and 18 rebounds (one off his career-high), and Garrison totaled 15 points and a career-best 10 rebounds (all defensive). Benn pulled in 10 rebounds by intermission, and had 13 on the defensive glass in all.

Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) also finished in double digits. He scored the team's first seven points and totaled 11 in the victory.

The Purple Eagles lead grew to as many as 15 in the second half, and the Mountaineers got no closer than seven points after that.

Niagara returns to action after the Thanksgiving Break with its final road game of a five-game stretch at Akron on Sunday at 2 p.m.
