Purple Eagles Softball Splits in Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Purple Eagle softball team (8-12) ended today with a split, defeating UMBC 7-6 and then falling to St. Francis 7-4 in extra innings.

In Niagara's first game of the day, pitcher Cassie Stone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) picked up her first career win with six strike outs, giving up two earned runs. Felicia Coffey (Mesa Az.) picked up two runs and Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run in the third inning to UMBC the game at 4-4. In the fourth inning Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a two-run home run to give Niagara the lead and the 7-6 victory.

In the second game of the day for the Purple Eagles, St. Francis took a three-run lead in the third inning before Healy blasted a two-run home run for a score of 3-2. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Maggie McDonald (Cicero, N.Y.) hit a double and Kristin Sito (Elyria, OH) drove her in to tie the game at three. In the seventh inning the Purps gave up four runs on three errors while scoring one to lose the game 7-4.

Niagara hits the field tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. taking on either UMBC or Mount St. Mary's.
