FAIRFAX, Va. - The Niagara softball team (2-5) earned its second win of the season on Saturday defeating Princeton 7-6 in the Patriot Invitational.
Scoreless for the first three innings Niagara kicked things off in the bottom of the fourth inning with Kayle Hines (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Teresa Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) each picking up a run to give Niagara a 2-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to tie the game.
Niagara kept the momentum rolling with Maggie McDonald (Cicero, N.Y.) hitting her first career home run followed by Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Az.) hitting an additional home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. This was the first back-to-back home runs hit on the season, giving Niagara a two-run lead.
Priceton claimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning scoring four runs for a two-run lead before Niagara scored three unanswered runs, including a game-winning single by Kristen Sito (Elyria Oh.) for a 7-6 final score.
"Today was a day of firsts. The first collegiate home run for freshman Maggie McDonald, the first back to back homeruns this year by McDonald and Junior Felicia Coffey, the first come from behind win of the season and the first game winning single by freshman Kristen Sito," said Al Dirschberger. "We were able to over come a slow start and played very well. Freshman Michelle Krier did an outstanding job in her second collegiate start and Sophomore Cassie Stone came in to finish the game being very effective against their batters."
The Purple Eagles continue tournament action on Sunday taking on Cornell at 9 am.
