BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara men's basketball team (11-5, 5-2 MAAC) was defeated by cross-town rival Canisius (3-14, 1-6 MAAC), 70-62, Friday at the Koessler Center. The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak against the Golden Griffins.

Canisius held Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.), the nation's leading scorer, to a season-low 21 points. The senior had an off shooting night, shooting 8-of-23 from the floor.

Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) and Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) each reached double-digit point totals with 15 and 13, respectively.

"They outworked us, outhustled us and outplayed us tonight," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "That was the story. Every 50-50 play went their way."

Niagara jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the contest, but the Golden Griffins battled back and took a 30-29 lead into the half. The Purple Eagles were doomed by two different scoring slumps, one in each half. NU was held without a point for 4:53 late in the first half and 5:30 in the middle of the second half.

Frank Turner led Canisius with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Three others added 10 points in the win.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Monday at Marist on Monday.
