STRATFORD, Conn. – Saint Peter’s College (22-21) scored nine runs in the sixth to post a come from behind 13-11 win over Niagara University (18-19) Thursday afternoon in the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at DeLuca Field.
With the Purple Eagles up 11-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Peahens took advantage of two walks and eight hits for the win.
Niagara was led by first team All-MAAC pick Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) and junior Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.) who each were 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Purple Eagles took a 4-0 lead in the first inning when senior Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) hit a two-run single to left field to score MAAC Rookie of the Year Kristin Kill (South Portland, Maine) and Sum. Constantz then knocked in two more runs with a bloop single just over third base to plate second team All-MAAC pick Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Baker.
Saint Peter’s scored one in the second when Julie Saporito doubled to left field and scored on a RBI single to left field by Megan Papierniak.
In the top of the fourth, Kill hit a double to left center field and then scored on a double to left field by Sum.
Niagara took an 11-1 lead in the fourth when the Purple Eagles scored on suicide squeeze when Constantz bunted for a single and second team All-MAAC selection Heather Lohrman (Newport Beach, Calif.) singled in freshman Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West). Coffey then hit a triple down the right field line to score Constantz and pinch runner freshman Laynie Stillman (Homer, N.Y.). Sum then hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season to center field.
Junior Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took the loss, giving up 12 hits and eight runs while striking out two in five and two thirds innings.
Niagara returns to action Friday when it takes on Marist College at 1 p.m.
