Softball Loses Two at Patriot Classic

Tiffany McCrory

FAIRFAX, Va. – Errors were the difference for the Niagara University softball team (0-4) as it lost a pair of games at the George Mason Patriot Classic Sunday afternoon. The Purple Eagles lost 3-1 to Cornell and then 10-2 to Central Connecticut State.

Niagara returns to action next weekend when it plays in the Mason Dixon Classic in Virginia Beach, Va.

Cornell 3, Niagara 1

Cornell scored three runs in the first two innings on two errors and then held on to beat Niagara for the second time in as many days.

The Purple Eagles got on the board in the top of the second when senior Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) doubled to right centerfield and scored on a RBI single by junior Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.).

Niagara had its best opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh. With bases loaded, freshman Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) drilled a line drive down the first base line but the first baseman nabbed the line drive to end the Purple Eagles’ chances.

Junior Tiffany McCrory (Alburquerque, N.M.) threw a one hitter over five and a third innings and struckout six.

Central Connecticut State 10, Niagara 2

Niagara committed five errors and gave the Blue Devils a 10-0 lead before getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.

Healy hit a two-run home run to left field scoring sophomore Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.) who doubled to left to get on base.

Junior Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took the loss on the mound.
