Softball Loses Pair at UMBC Spring Classic

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (3-10) could not find its bats as it dropped two games in the UMBC Spring Classic Friday in Baltimore, Md.

The Purple Eagles lost 3-1 to Cleveland State (13-2) in the first game and 6-1 in the second to UMBC (9-6).

Niagara returns to action Saturday when it plays Sacred Heart at 2:30 p.m.

Cleveland State 3, Niagara 1

Christa Coppus hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift Cleveland State to its 13th win of the season.

Haley Keller singled to open the inning, moved to third on a single by Jessica Burt and the pair then scored on Coppus’ double.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Keller singled in Sarah Milosek.

Niagara tied the game in the bottom of the inning when junior Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a solo home run down the left field line. She was 2 for 3 at the plate, and senior Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) collected her fourth double of the season.

Junior Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took the loss on the mound, giving up three hits and two runs in an inning of work. Classmate Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) gave up eight hits and a run while striking out eight in six innings of work.

Amanda Macenko got the win, throwing a four-hitter and striking out three.

UMBC 6, Niagara 1

Rookie Kristin Kill (South Portland, Maine) went 3 for 4 with two doubles but it wasn’t enough as the Purple Eagles lost their fourth-straight game.

UMBC took a 4-0 lead into the sixth before Niagara got on the scoreboard. Kill doubled down the left field line to open the inning, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a single to right field by Sum.

The Retrievers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final score.

Viola took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Ashley Gray got the win, tossing a five-hitter with five strikeouts.
