Softball Drops 3-2 Game at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC’s Amanda Fefel got the win on the mound and had the game-winning hit as the Retrievers defeated Niagara University, 3-2, Thursday in a non-conference softball game at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Fefel’s game-winning hit came in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, the rookie hit a two-run single to left field to give the Retrievers a 3-2 lead. On the mound, Fefel threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Niagara took a 2-0 in the top of the third when junior Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a two-run single through the right side that scored freshmen Jenna Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) and Kristen Kill (South Portland, Maine).

Sophomore Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.) and Baker had the Purple Eagles other two hits.

Sophomore Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) took the loss on the mound for Niagara, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out three in two and third innings. Rookie Cassie Stone (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) closed out the game, throwing three and two-thirds innings and giving up two hits and striking out three.

Niagara returns to action Friday when it meets Cleveland State in the first game of the UMBC Spring Classic. First pitch is at 11:30 a.m.
