Baseball Kicks Off Big Week With Sunday Sweep

Frank Kurnik

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The baseball team (3-6) started its eight games in eight days stretch with a pair of wins over Virginia Wesleyan College, Sunday, 11-9 and 14-5. The Purple Eagles had double-digit runs and hits in both contests and were led offensively by a pair of four-hit games by center fielder Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.).

Junior Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) and senior Matt Ircandia (Calgary, Alb.) each picked up wins on the mound while junior first baseman Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) collected hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 31 games.

"I am pleased with how our team responded and handled the change in our spring break," Niagara head coach Chris Chernisky said. "We played a very solid opponent and were able to gain two victories."

The Purple Eagle offense gave Wilson (2-2) plenty of help as the right-hander went five innings, leaving with a 9-3 lead. Kurnik had his first four-hit performance of the day to pace Niagara, and junior shortstop Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) picked up a pair of base hits in the win.

Kurnik picked up three extra-base hits including a triple and two doubles as the Purple Eagles scored a season-high 14 runs. Alberts connected on a solo home run in the second inning and Harrison Harber (Kanata, Ont.) had a two-run home run for Niagara.

Ircandia (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, going 5.2 innings.

"Ircandia was solid on the hill for us," Chernisky added. "He kept their hitters off-balance and minimized the damage, especially after the first inning."

The Purple Eagles continue their spring break road trip with a contest at No. 4 Virginia, March 13 at 4 p.m.
