JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Junior Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) scored all four of his points in the final 13 seconds of the game as the Niagara University men’s basketball team (14-11, 9-5) held on to beat Saint Peter’s College (3-21, 1-13), 63-59 Friday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Yanitelli Center.
The Purple Eagles were led by senior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) with a game-high 18 points, including 11 points in the second half. Junior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) registered his fourth double-double of the season and sixth of his career with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior J.R. Duffey (Ft. Worth, Texas) collected 12 points.
Saint Peter’s was led by Akeem Gooding’s 14 points while Todd Sowell had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Leading 59-57 with 13 seconds left, Hodge scored his first points of the game with two free throws. Saint Peter’s Kevin Spann then scored on an offensive rebound with six seconds remaining to make it 61-59. Hodge was then fouled on the in-bounds pass and sank two more free throws with four seconds left for the win.
Niagara opened the second half with a 14-3 run capped by a Brown dunk at 10:30 for a 47-37 lead. Saint Peter’s came back with seven-straight points to cut the lead to 47-44 on a jumper by Gooding. Niagara took an eight-point lead, 56-48, when Brown had a tip in with 4:18 left. The Peacocks answered when Raul Orta sank a three-pointer to end a 9-3 run with 51 seconds left and set up Hodge’s game-winning free throws.
In the first half, Niagara broke an 18-18 tie with a 12-4 run for a 30-22 lead on a conventional three-point play by Fisher with 2:55 left. The Peacocks closed the half with a 7-2 run for the 32-29 halftime score.
Niagara returns to action Sunday when it travels to Riverdale, N.Y., to play Manhattan College at 2 p.m. in Draddy Gym.
