JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The baseball team (0-2) and East Tennessee State (3-2) were unable to finish their weekend series due to inclement weather. Sunday’s game was cancelled, and Saturday’s contest that was suspended in the top of the seventh inning with the Purple Eagles trailing 6-4, becomes final, dropping the Purple Eagles’ record to 0-2.
Niagara jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, after a two-run triple by junior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). The base hit extended the first baseman’s hitting streak to 24 games, dating back to last season.
Junior Chris Leendertse (Ancaster, Ont.) had his second two-hit game of the early season, but the Purple Eagles were plagued by five errors, allowing two unearned runs.
Sophomore Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) started the game, but allowed three runs, two earned, in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.) gave up two runs, one earned, in three innings of relief, earning the loss in his first appearance of the season.
Junior catcher Clink Elkins (Kansas City, Mo.) picked up two hits and scored a run. Steve Baldinelli (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.) each produced an RBI in the loss. Freshman pitcher Marcus Spaulding (Welland, Ont.) pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing one hit while striking out two.
The Purple Eagles return to the diamond Feb. 23-25, at Virginia Military Institute.
