BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s highest scoring team was held in check Sunday afternoon as the Niagara University men’s basketball team (11-11, 6-5) lost 68-56 at Fairfield University (8-15, 6-5) in the Arena at Harbor Yard.
The Purple Eagles, who entered the game with a streak of nine 80-plus point games, scored just 56 points against a Stags’ team that limits its opponents to 65.4 points per game.
Senior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) posted his 10th double-double of the season and 16th of his career with game highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) scored 14 points.
Fairfield was led by Anthony Johnson’s 16 points.
The Stags turned a nine-point lead just under two minutes into the second half into a 17-point lead when they put together a 13-6 run over a five-minute span. Freshman Greg Nero scored six points and Herbie Allen four.
Niagara got to within 11 points when senior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) scored at 6:18, but Fairfield pushed its lead to 16 points with an 8-3 run.
A three-pointer from Fisher and a layup for freshman Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) again cut the lead to 11 points, 64-53, but the Stags scored four-straight points for the win.
In the first half, Fairfield had an early 18-11 lead when Allen sank a three-pointer to cap a 9-2 run. The Stags extended their lead to 11 points at the 5:24 mark. Niagara came back when Brown scored five of Niagara’s next nine points to trail by four, 29-25, with 2:08 left. Fairfield scored the half’s final five points for a 34-25 halftime lead.
Niagara returns to action Friday when it hosts Manhattan College in the legendary Taps Gallagher Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
