NIAGARA UN., N.Y. – Coming off a successful weekend at home, the Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams (3-5, 5-5) travel to the Reilly Center Pool Tuesday to take on Big Four rival St. Bonaventure (2-4,4-3) at 6 p.m.
On Jan.19, the Purple Eagles beat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Canisius College. The women’s team won 127-98, and the men’s team, 147-72. On Jan. 20, the women’s team made it a 2-0 weekend when it defeated Siena College, 130-106.
Freshman Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls High), Niagara’s Athlete of the Week, won a combined six events this past weekend. Junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.), helped the Purple Eagle men’s team to victory with a pair of wins over the Golden Griffins.
The St. Bonaventure men’s team lost to Binghamtona Jan. 20, 141-101, and the women squad defeated the Bearcats, 165-75.
The last time Niagara and St. Bonaventure met, Bonnies came away with a sweep at the Oxy Aquatic Center Feb. 6, 2006. The men lost, 179-69, and the women fell, 180-54.
Tuesday is the last regular-season meet for the Purple Eagles as they will travel to the MAAC Championships in Baltimore, Md., for a three-day event beginning Feb.9.
