Softball Loses 4-3 at Buffalo

Freshman Jennifer Yee broke the single-season school record for home runs with her 10th Tuesday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.) broke the single-season record for home runs despite the Niagara University softball team (22-19) losing 4-3 to the University at Buffalo (13-39) Tuesday at Nan Harvey Field.

Yee hit a solo shot to right centerfield in the first inning to give her 10 homers on the season.

The Bulls took the lead in the bottom half of the inning as the first four Bulls reached base. Marcy Hansen singled and advanced to third on a double by Mary Russell. Hansen then tied the game on a single by Erin Zilka. Niagara committed an error on a pick-off attempt, giving Buffalo a 3-1 lead.

The Purple Eagles cut the lead to 3-2 when sophomore Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.) walked, moved to third on junior Lisa Baker’s (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) single and then scored on a UB error.

Buffalo made it 4-2 after two innings when Lauren Picciano hit a triple to right center and then scored on a bunt single by Hansen.

Niagara scored the final run of the game in the third when Yee singled to left field and sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit an RBI double to centerfield.

Freshman Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) took the loss, throwing a five-hitter with two earned runs, three strikeouts and two walks.

Yee was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Baker, Healy and junior Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) had Niagara’s other three hits.

The Purple Eagles return to action Thursday when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for a 3 p.m. doubleheader vs. first place Marist College.
