Softball Splits Doubleheader vs. Iona


Freshman Jennifer Yee tied the Niagara single-season home runs record with a two-run bomb Sunday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (22-17, 4-6) earned a doubleheader split with Iona College (9-27, 3-7) Sunday at Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles lost the first, 2-0, and won the nightcap, 4-2.

Niagara closes the season with an eight-game road swing beginning Tuesday with a doubleheader vs. the University at Buffalo at 3 p.m.

Iona 2, Niagara 0

Sophomore Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) threw a one-hitter, but it wasn’t enough as Iona scored two unearned runs for the win.

The Gaels scored first when Valerie Laschen scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Becky Riccitelli in the first inning.

Iona took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Lolli Mills walked, went to second on a passed ball, was sacrificed to third and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Lindsay John.

Niagara’s four hits came form freshman Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.), sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.), junior Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) and sophomore Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.).

Iona’s lone hit was a double by Stacy Moyer in the seventh inning.

Niagara 4, Iona 2

Jennifer Yee tied the Niagara single-season home run record and helped Niagara earn the doubleheader split with Iona.

Niagara took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Yee hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season. The rookie hit the two-run bomb to left field to score junior Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) from second.

The Purple Eagles scored two runs in the sixth when Baker scored on a passed ball and Yee scored on a squeeze play off a fielder’s choice.

Iona scored its two runs in the seventh when Alyson Funn hit a two-run double, but was thrown out at third to end the game.

Healy was 2-for-3, and McCrory picked up her 11th win of the season with a five-hitter.
